Defense Firms Form Standards Group

Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin Corp. and Northrop Grumman Corp., the three biggest U.S. defense contractors, and 25 other companies formed a group to create common technology standards for military-communication networks.

The Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium will develop basic rules to help new combat vehicles communicate with one another, the group said. Other members include Microsoft Corp., the world’s largest software maker, and IBM Corp., the biggest computer maker.

* A joint venture led by Lockheed Martin Corp. won a NATO contract worth as much as $3 billion over nine years to develop the Medium Extended Air Defense Systems, an anti-missile system designed to work with NATO’s command structure that uses the latest version of the Patriot missile.
