UCLA gets A & M collection

Share

The UCLA Library has completed its acquisition of the A&M; Records Collection, a compendium of recordings, music manuscripts, photographs, correspondence and other materials from the personal collection of label founders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss, who donated them to UCLA.

The archive is believed to be one of the only such collections installed in a library. A&M; was formed in 1962 and was one of the record business’ leading independent labels for nearly three decades before being sold in 1989 to PolyGram.

Its roster of artists includes trumpeter Alpert’s group the Tijuana Brass, Peter Frampton, the Police, Joe Cocker, Cat Stevens, Procol Harum, the Carpenters, Janet Jackson, Chet Baker and Stan Getz.

The material, housed in the Music Library Special Collections, is now available to members of the public who register for a free reference card at the library.
