Tax Proposed on Spam, Other Canned Meats

Lawmakers in Olympia want to tax Spam.
Along with proposed tax increases on cigarettes and liquor to make up a $1.6-billion shortfall, the Senate budget proposal would slap a higher tax on canned meat, including Spam, Vienna sausages and potted ham.
“I’m torn between my love for Vienna sausages and my love for state services,” said lobbyist Lauren Moughon, who called the canned meat product a “guilty, guilty pleasure.”
