Thriller? Not Really

Joel Pett is the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Lexington Herald-Leader. His work also appears in USA Today.

The all-Jacko-yakko channels make this year’s Trial of the Century seem like a must-draw for editorial cartoonists. But is it? It doesn’t take a comic genius to snarkily tie the King of Pop’s alleged crimes to sister Janet’s famous wardrobe malfunction or to mock the whole jammies-in-court thing. And let’s not forget the plastic surgery jokes. (Michael denies and his nose grows! He sneezes and it falls off!)

Truth is, there’s not a lot to opine about until the verdict is read. You can stretch to put events in a real-world context, as Jeff Koterba gamely does. Or, as Steve Kelley deftly illustrates, you can deplore the unseemly media onslaught even as you pile on. If you can’t “beat it,” join it.
