In a series of coordinated assaults, communist rebels attacked a Nepalese army base, bombed nine unoccupied government buildings and stormed a local jail, freeing 15 comrades, officials said.

Two police officers were killed in the attack on the jail, which set free 28 inmates in all, the officials said.

They said the government buildings were closed because they were bombed late at night.

The attacks occurred at Charikot, 75 miles east of Katmandu, police said.
