Firefighters extinguished a blaze in an overcrowded budget hotel in Paris, and the death toll rose to 20, half of them children.

Fifty-three people were injured, 11 seriously.

Many were African immigrants and other poor people whom authorities had placed temporarily at the six-story Paris Opera hotel. Some jumped from windows.

Ninety people were registered in the 32-room hotel. It had only one exit.
