Film Industry Has a Reel Stake in Mayoral Race

Re “L.A. Out of the Picture as Stars Back Candidates,” April 11: The Times got only part of the story. Although celebrities are drawn to national issues, the business of making movies, television programs and commercials relies on Los Angeles and its elected officials to maintain pro-filming policies. And we appreciate their efforts on behalf of our industry.

The Motion Picture Assn. of America (Disney, Fox, MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros.) works with its allies -- including the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild of America, other guilds and unions, the commercial industry and related groups -- to build and maintain relationships with city leaders.

By the time of the May 17 mayoral runoff, an industry coalition will have met with Mayor James K. Hahn and Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa to discuss issues of mutual concern. With states actively competing to lure production, and the tens of thousand of jobs created, our local leaders have a stake in maintaining Los Angeles as a film-friendly place to make motion pictures. And our industry takes its responsibility to reach out to our political leadership seriously.
