Colonial Colony Looking to End Eight-Race Slump

Share

Since his improbable victory at 62-1 in the Stephen Foster Handicap last June 12 at Churchill Downs, Colonial Colony has been in a slump.

The 7-year-old Pleasant Colony horse, who is owned by Lakeside Farms LLC, has lost eight in a row since he stunned Southern Image and four others in the Foster. Now trained by Dallas Stewart -- Walter Bindner Jr. was his conditioner for his biggest win -- Colonial Colony will try to end his dry spell in today’s $150,000 Ben Ali at Keeneland.

A Grade III at 1 1/8 miles, the Ben Ali lured seven others, including 123-pound highweight Pies Prospect, Ole Faunty, Alumni Hall, Best Minister, Niigon, Formal Attire and Go Now.

Pies Prospect and Go Now are each trained by Nick Zito, who won with nine of his first 29 starters at Keeneland. The former will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano and the latter, who ended a seven-race losing streak April 15, will be handled by Larry Melancon.

Best Minister, who is trained by Ken McPeek for the Phillips Racing Partnership, will be looking for his third win in five starts at Keeneland. Gary Stevens will ride the 5-year-old son of Deputy Minister.

Race of the day: Andujar, who broke her maiden in her second U.S. race for owner S.L. Darpat and trainer Julio Canani on April 7, will make her main track debut in today’s seventh at Hollywood Park.

Jose Valdivia Jr. will ride the 4-year-old Quiet American filly in the $51,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles.

Only four others -- Sharpened Copy, One Charming Devil, Kalookan Lass and Ran For The Dough -- are scheduled to run.

One for the road: Judge’s Case ran well when second behind a loose-on-the-lead Spooky Mulder and can take advantage of a more contested pace in today’s fifth at Aqueduct. Apprentice Channing Hill will ride the 8-year-old Montbrook gelding for the LaMarca Stable and trainer Jason Servis in the $50,000 claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A late pick four using Railroad, Bobby The Bagger and Lone Prairie in the fifth, The Usual, Impressive Flight and Sunshine Dreamer in the sixth, Andujar in the seventh and Euro Mazing, Glitter Me and Iyieldtonoone in the eighth.
