Wainwright Is Choice of DePaul

Jerry Wainwright is leaving Richmond to take over the DePaul basketball program, the university confirmed Wednesday.

Wainwright, who had a 50-41 record in three seasons at Richmond, replaces Dave Leitao, who left for Virginia this month.

Wainwright, 58, has led teams to the NCAA tournament in three of the last six seasons: Richmond in 2004 and North Carolina Wilmington in 2000 and 2002.

During eight seasons at Wilmington, Wainwright was 136-103, including an upset of USC in the first round of the 2002 NCAA tournament.

DePaul finished 20-11 overall and 10-6 in Conference USA last season and made it to the second round of the NIT. The Blue Demons will join the Big East in the 2005-06 season.

USC Coach Tim Floyd picked up his fifth recruit when the Trojans received a letter of intent from Ryan Francis, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound point guard who was Louisiana’s Class 4-A player of the year.

Francis averaged 22 points, five assists and three steals while leading Glen Oaks High to a 36-0 record and a state title.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Georgia Tech point guard Jarrett Jack will make himself available for the NBA draft next week but will not immediately hire an agent.

The 6-3 junior has until May 15 to declare.

Connecticut point guard Antonio Kellogg has been expelled from the school and granted a special form of probation on charges stemming from two recent arrests.

The 19-year-old freshman was in court on charges including attempting to assault a police officer, first-degree criminal trespass and interfering with an officer.

Kim Clijsters advanced to the quarterfinals of the J&S; Cup at Warsaw by defeating Russian teenager Maria Kirilenko, 6-2, 6-1.

Clijsters next plays fifth-seeded Elena Bovina, who needed six match points to beat Daniela Hantuchova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova, a 2004 finalist in the tournament, beat Anna Smashnova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.

Third-seeded Joachim Johansson lost, 6-2, 6-4, to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the Estoril Open at Oeiras, Portugal, but second-seeded Gaston Gaudio moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Michal Tabara.

In the women’s draw, second-seeded Dinara Safina celebrated her 19th birthday with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Claudine Schaul in a delayed first-round match.

Four first-round matches were completed before rain again disrupted the BMW Open at Munich. Jarkko Nieminen beat Bohdan Ulihrach, 7-5, 6-1; Peter Luczak defeated Florian Mayer, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2; Michal Mertinak beat Julien Benneteau, 6-4, 6-1; and Lee Hyung-taik defeated Jean-Rene Lisnard, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

College Golf

The UCLA men’s team had a poor final round at the Pacific 10 Conference championships. The Bruins shot 16-over-par 283 and finished fourth at 12-over 1,432 after contending for the title after the first three rounds at Walla Walla, Wash.

With a final-round score of five-under-276, Washington made up 17 strokes on Arizona State, which shot 279, to tie the Sun Devils for the team title at eight-over 1,428.

USC, which shot a final-round 362, finished seventh at 24-over 1,444.

Washington sophomore Erik Olson survived bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 to beat Arizona senior Nathan Lashley by a stroke for the individual title. Olson shot a 69 to finish at eight-under 276. Lashley also shot a 69.

College Football

The East-West Shrine Game, the nation’s oldest college all-star football game, is moving from San Francisco to San Antonio.

The game, played since 1923, will be held in the Alamodome beginning next year, game officials said. The 2006 game is scheduled for Jan. 21.

Pro Football

Veteran cornerback Aaron Glenn signed a two-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys a day after being released by the Houston Texans.

Glenn, who turns 33 in September, spent his first eight seasons with the New York Jets and the last three in Houston. He has 35 career interceptions.

Jet defensive tackle Josh Evans has retired, deciding to end his nine-year career because of a back injury. Evans, 32, played in only one game in 2004 after undergoing season-ending back surgery.

Edgar Vargas (8-1, 2 knockouts) of Santa Ana and Michaelangelo Lynks (6-2, 1) of Los Angeles will meet tonight in a scheduled eight-round fight for the California state lightweight title in the main event of a five-bout card at the Irvine Marriott.

Swimmer Anthony Ervin is auctioning off the gold medal he won in the 50-meter freestyle in the 2000 Olympics to raise money for victims of last year’s tsunami.

Tunney Hunsaker, who lost to Muhammad Ali in the boxing great’s first professional fight, died Monday in Fayetteville, W.Va., of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 75. Story in Section B.
