Update -- The U.S. Open Cup is the nation’s oldest soccer competition, dating to 1914, when the Brooklyn Field Club won the inaugural edition. The Galaxy won the Cup in 2001. Chivas USA is taking part for the first time in what is now the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Both teams will be missing injured starters. Galaxy defender Tyrone Marshall has a strained right hamstring, and Chivas USA midfielder Hector Cuadros is out because of a concussion. Chivas USA will also be minus midfielder Rodrigo Lopez, who was called up by the U.S. under-18 national team to compete in the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. Tonight’s winner -- there can be no tie -- will play the winner of the San Jose Earthquake-Portland Timber match in the quarterfinals Aug. 24.
