Evening Attire Will Try to Dress for Success

Share

After a steady diet of appearances in graded stakes, Evening Attire will try softer company in the seventh race today at Saratoga.

A multiple stakes winner with nearly $2.4 million in earnings, Evening Attire, a 7-year-old gray son of Black Tie Affair, will be trying to win for only the second time in 14 starts since the beginning of 2004.

No threat in either the Brooklyn or Suburban handicaps in his last two races at Belmont Park, Evening Attire is returning to his favorite track in the $60,000 optional claimer at 1 1/8 miles.

Owned by Joseph and Mary Grant and Thomas Kelly and trained by Patrick Kelly, Evening Attire has won five of eight at Saratoga.

Cornelio Velasquez will ride against Trapped Again, Go Now, Separato, New York Hero, Cherokee Spook, Sinister G and Dr. Rockett.

Meanwhile, at Del Mar, Siphon Honey will drop out of consecutive graded races and shorten up in the seventh, a $61,000 optional claimer at 6 1/2 furlongs. Patrick Valenzuela, the last jockey to have won with the 6-year-old mare, will be aboard for owner D&L; Trucking Inc. and trainer Don Leifeld.

Race of the day: Karakorum Splendor, who won by 5 1/4 lengths in the slop at Belmont on July 8, will try to stretch her speed around two turns as she faces five other New York-bred fillies in the $250,000 Statue Of Liberty today at Saratoga. John Velazquez will ride the 3-year-old A.P. Jet filly for Karakorum Farm and trainer Jimmy Jerkens in the 1 1/8 -mile race. The field is completed by Avery Hall, Dynamo Hun, Fountain’sprincess, Stellar Maiden and Ms Litigator.

One for the road: Capistrano is back in the barn of trainer Brian Williamson and in with Illinois-breds for the first time since last year, and she should show big improvement in today’s ninth at Arlington. In two previous starts for Williamson, the daughter of Louis Quatorze had a first and a third. Idle since Feb. 19, Capistrano has trained well for her return and gets Chris Emigh in the $29,000 allowance at one mile.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Succeed Or Bust and Lord Sundridge in the second, Cosmic Lady and High Society in the third and Sea Kris, Carbonator and Delegate It in the fourth.
