Tying up traffic with too much information

Re “Caltrans Tries to Answer Day’s Toughest Questions,” Aug. 9

On Monday, I was driving south on the Ventura Freeway from Canoga Park to Sherman Oaks. When I first got on the freeway, the traffic was moving smoothly, but within a minute or two the traffic slowed noticeably. I turned on the radio to get a traffic report and did not hear anything about any accidents either north or southbound.

It was only as I approached the Encino area that I discovered the problem: All the cars were slowing to read the sign about the length of time it would take to get downtown. I think the traffic would have been moving more rapidly if the sign were not posted.
