More roads won’t solve our transportation ills
Re “Bush Signs Transportation Bill, Says It Will Deliver Jobs,” Aug. 11
President Bush says, “Our economy depends on us having the most efficient, reliable transportation system in the world.” Is he implying we have such a system now or that the transportation bill will move us toward that goal? Either is blatantly false. Anyone who commutes in our major cities knows the system doesn’t work and can’t be fixed by building more roads.
Not only is that expensive, but by diverting funds from long-term, efficient solutions, it perpetuates the financial and environmental burden of our oil addiction. What kind of infrastructure will we have when oil gets too expensive? Of course, there will be plenty of money to rebuild it then because our economy will be humming along!
