Solstice may be protected
ABOUT 150 acres of Solstice Canyon could be protected as part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area using $1.2 million in funding allocated in the transportation bill President Bush signed into law earlier this month.
About half of the 1,115-acre canyon falls in the park’s boundaries, but the new funds could be used to acquire lands and preserve nearly two-thirds of the canyon, says park spokesman Charles Taylor.
Visitors go to Lower Solstice Canyon to enjoy a 40-foot waterfall, a year-round stream and hiking trails. It also contains habitat for steelhead trout, an endangered species.
“We’re in the process of restoring the area so that the steelhead can come back,” Taylor says. “We’ll probably have a very, very healthy creek in a couple of years.”
