Intel Unveils Low-Power Microprocessor Design

Intel Corp. unveiled a power-stingy microprocessor design that aims to make computers operate at lower temperatures.

Intel borrowed energy-saving elements from its Centrino line of chips for laptops, Chief Executive Paul Otellini said.

Intel expects to ship chips based on the design in the second half of 2006 and to base all its chips on the design.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company is incorporating Centrino’s power-saving features into its Pentium processors so that computer makers can produce smaller, faster and quieter machines that do more, such as share videos with DVD players.
