Siphonizer Stuck in Slump

Share

Siphonizer hasn’t made much noise since winning the 2003 Del Mar Futurity.

The 4-year-old son of Siphon has won once in seven starts since he beat Minister Eric, Perfect Moon and two others in the Futurity, Del Mar’s signature event for 2-year-olds.

Owned by B. Wayne Hughes and trained by Richard Mandella, Siphonizer will try for his first victory in California since the Futurity surprise -- he was 5-1 that day -- when he takes on five opponents in today’s seventh, a $70,000 optional claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs.

Fourth in a restricted stakes on the grass at Hollywood Park in his last appearance June 17, Siphonizer will race with blinkers for the first time. He will be ridden by David Flores, who was aboard when the dark bay broke his maiden in his debut Aug. 2, 2003, at Del Mar.

The race also attracted Zanzibar, Hasty Kris, who scratched from Sunday’s Pat O’Brien, Onebadshark, Jeffries Bay and Captain Squire, who hasn’t raced since he finished third in an allowance race on the Hollywood Park turf June 6, 2004.

Race of the day: Carminooch, owned in part by actor Tony Sirico, who plays Paulie Walnuts on the HBO series “The Sopranos,” will try to win for the second time in as many starts on the Saratoga main track when he takes on five other New York breds today in the $150,000 Albany. John Velazquez will ride Carminooch, who has won three of six races, for trainer Todd Pletcher in the 1 1/8 -mile race. The horse to catch is Blue Sunday, who beat Runningforpresident by 3 3/4 lengths Aug. 4.

One for the road: Capistrano was an unlucky loser in her first start in nearly six months Aug. 4 and can make amends with a clean trip in today’s eighth at Arlington. Chris Emigh will ride the 3-year-old Louis Quatorze filly for owner Nancy Vanier and trainer Brian Williamson in the $27,000 allowance for Illinois breds at one mile.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Lake Of Gold in the sixth; all in the seventh; and Via Rodeo, Cool Valley Cowboy, Veiled Meeting and Always Royal in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 2/78. Money: Previous day/meet total: $11/$464.20. Total money bet: $514.
