The Bush administration urged Britain not to pledge government support to help European aircraft manufacturer Airbus develop a new jet to compete with Boeing.

It “would signal the continuation of subsidies for the A350 [mid-sized jet],” said a spokeswoman for the U.S. trade representative’s office.

Airbus, which is 80% owned by European aerospace company EADS and 20% by Britain’s BAE Systems, hopes to win board approval to develop the A350 by the end of September. The regional jet would compete with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner.
