Western Digital Corp., the third-largest U.S. supplier of disk drives for personal computers, named Arif Shakeel as chief executive, replacing Matthew Massengill.

Shakeel, 50, is currently president and chief operating officer. Massengill will remain executive chairman, Lake Forest-based Western Digital said.

Massengill, who had been CEO since 2000, had told the board he wanted to step down and become executive chairman, Western Digital said. Shakeel, who joined the company as a product marketing manager in 1985, became COO in April 2001 and was named president in January 2002.
