Bully Bones May Push Around Debutante Field

Share

Six of the 11 2-year-old fillies scheduled to run today in the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante are coming off victories.

Only one, however, is a stakes winner. Bully Bones, who remained unbeaten in two races with a victory in the Sorrento on Aug. 6, is the filly to fear most in the Debutante, a Grade I race at seven furlongs.

Owned by a partnership and trained by David La Croix, Bully Bones, a daughter of Hesabull, was 37-1 when she won at first asking April 23 at Hollywood Park. Idle until the Sorrento, she prevailed by 1 1/2 lengths under jockey Rene Douglas, successfully stretching from 4 1/2 furlongs to 6 1/2 .

Of the others entering off wins, Wild Fit is arguably the most impressive. A gray Wild Wonder filly owned by a partnership and trained by Jeff Mullins, Wild Fit won by four lengths on Aug. 14, drawing away in the stretch after being seventh of eight early. She will be ridden by Alex Solis.

Mystery Girl will be coupled in the betting with Diplomat Lady, who was fourth in the Sorrento. The rest of the winners are Golden Silk, Calamity June and Miss Norman.

Completing the field are Indian Breeze, who will be running with blinkers after finishing eighth as the 2-1 favorite in the Sorrento, I Can See and River’s Prayer, who will be running without the blinkers in her first outing since she was second to Indian Breeze in the Landaluce on July 2 at Hollywood Park.

Race of the day: Dream’s, who is two for two in this country for trainer Ron McAnally, will make her debut at Del Mar and make her first start since July 13 in today’s seventh, a $76,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles on turf. Solis will ride the 4-year-old, Chilean-bred filly against a field that includes Round Heels, an Irish-bred making her U.S. debut for trainer Laura de Seroux after winning six of 12 in Italy and France.

One for the road: Bench Press looks to be the controlling speed in the second at Bay Meadows and can go wire to wire in the $4,000 claimer at 1 1/16 miles.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Celtic Fable, Bengal Lore and Talkin To Mom Roo in the third, Veiled Speed and Petrus in the fourth and Smokey White Eyes, Souvenir Sands and Stillwell in the fifth.
