From Times Wire Reports

Hundreds of people bowed their heads while bells and gongs rang at solemn vigils around Australia as Singapore executed a convicted Australian drug smuggler.

Nguyen Tuong Van, 25, was hanged at Changi Prison for attempting to smuggle nearly 14 ounces of heroin through Changi Airport in 2002. He was the first Australian to be executed in 12 years.

Singapore repeatedly rejected pleas for clemency, saying its tough laws and mandatory penalties for drug trafficking are an effective deterrent.
