Opponents, Observers Criticize Election

Opposition leaders called for Kazakh President Nursultan A. Nazarbayev’s election to be declared invalid, and Western-led observers said the vote that gave him 91% support was flawed.
Nazarbayev’s main challenger, Zhamarkhan Tuyakbai, said, “We will take all necessary measures to appeal the results.”
Audrey Glover of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said that “the Kazakhstan authorities did not provide a level playing field for democratic elections.”
