A 17-year-old student was shot in the back in a drive-by shooting outside an Anaheim continuation school Monday, police said.

The student was standing outside South West Anaheim school at Katella Avenue and Nutwood Street about 11:30 a.m. when the passengers of a black Ford Taurus shouted gang slang and fired three to six shots, said Anaheim police spokesman Sgt. Rick Martinez.

A car matching that description was recovered less than two miles from the school, Martinez said. The teenager, who was not identified because he is a minor, was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, he said.

The school, which is run by the Orange County Department of Education, occupies a white building at the end of a strip mall. It has about 90 students referred from other schools because they were at risk of not graduating or were habitually truant, said Rick Martin, director of educational programs for the department.

The student had attended since July or August, he said.

Another drive-by shooting occurred outside the school about five months ago, Martinez said. Nobody was hurt, and undercover officers immediately made arrests, he said.
