A vote for a third party

Share

Dan Schnur’s analysis of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Republican dilemma (Opinion, Dec. 6) stops at the border of a better answer than having the governor run as an independent.

As the two major parties continue to be increasingly polarized, leaving moderates with few good choices, perhaps it is time for a third party to offer alternatives. I would like to vote for a party that fields candidates who are fiscally responsible and socially progressive. The governor shows tendencies in those directions, but he is clearly hampered by rightist anchoring from Republicans. I don’t doubt that a similarly inclined Democrat would likewise be pulled to the left.

A two-party system is convenient when it comes to organizing the government, but it increasingly leaves a lot to be desired as a source of workable policy leading to practical solutions to California’s seemingly unyielding problems.
