L.A. Phil will record a CD

Although the Los Angeles Philharmonic has been performing at Walt Disney Concert Hall for more than two years, it has so far made no commercial recordings there. But that is scheduled to change in mid-January.

The orchestra announced Thursday that it is changing its Jan. 12 to 15 programs to record them for a CD for Deutsche Grammophon. It will be the Philharmonic’s first CD since 2001.

On Jan. 12 and 13, music director Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct a Philharmonic showpiece, Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring,” along with Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” and Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 2, the latter with soloist Lang Lang. The Jan. 14 to 15 program will be the same, except the Suite from Bartok’s “The Miraculous Mandarin” will replace the Mussorgsky.

The recording will include all the works played except the piano concerto.

Meanwhile, the U.S. premiere of Salonen’s “Helix,” originally announced for those dates, has been postponed until the 2006-07 season.

According to a Philharmonic spokesman, future recordings are under discussion.
