Hart didn’t tell the whole story

Re “Intelligence abuse deja vu,” Dec. 21

It is ironic that former Colorado Sen. Gary Hart preaches about the abuses of intelligence agencies and takes credit for his part in the Church Committee, while ignoring his role in the creation of the current Department of Homeland Security.

Before 9/11, in 1998, Hart and then-New Hampshire Sen. Warren B. Rudman co-chaired the Hart-Rudman Committee, or, as it was formally known, “the U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century.”

The commission was originally created at the urging of President Clinton and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. Its reports were the basis for the creation of a new Cabinet-level spy agency by the Bush administration, unifying the CIA and FBI.
