39 Died Over Holiday Weekend, CHP Says
The California Highway Patrol reported that 39 people died on state highways and city streets over the Christmas holiday weekend from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Monday.
Of the 26 who died on state highways, three were pedestrians, CHP spokeswoman Jaime Coffee said Tuesday. Nine people who died in vehicle accidents were not wearing seat belts.
The last time the Christmas reporting period was longer than three days was 2000, when the CHP recorded 33 deaths statewide. The total number of deaths was 25 last year, when the holiday period was one day shorter.
