Craig Stars for U.S. Water Polo

Kami Craig, the only high school player on the U.S. water polo national team at the 2005 FINA Junior Women’s World Championships in Perth, Australia, scored a goal in the team’s 11-9 victory over Russia in the championship game Sunday.

Craig, a senior at Santa Barbara High who plans to play at USC, also scored a goal in a 5-4 semifinal victory over Australia on Saturday.

It was the second year in a row that the U.S. won the title.

Boys’ Basketball

Westchester’s Amir Johnson and Marcus Johnson, along with Davon Jefferson of Lynwood, were selected to participate in the 41st Roundball Classic all-star game March 22 in Chicago.

Amir Johnson, a 6-foot-10 center who has committed to Louisville, and Marcus Johnson, a 6-5 forward headed to Connecticut, will play for the West. Jefferson, a 6-8 forward who committed to Nevada Las Vegas, will play for the East.

Girls’ Basketball

Glendale will forfeit nonleague games against Phelan Serrano and Woodland Hills Louisville for using an ineligible player, Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons said. The Nitros’ record falls to 5-16, and Serrano’s record improves to 6-12 and Louisville’s to 2-16.

Football

Pete Duffy resigned as coach of Hemet West Valley to accept the same position at Moreno Valley Rancho Verde, pending school board approval Feb. 8.

West Valley was 8-3 in Duffy’s only season, sharing the Sunbelt League title. He was 60-23-1 at L.A. Fremont and won a City Invitational title. He replaces Bill Holst, who resigned for personal reasons.

Perris Citrus Hill, which will open in the fall with freshmen and sophomores, has hired Doug Dubois as its coach, pending school board approval Feb. 8. Dubois was an assistant last season at Riverside Poly and had also coached at Moreno Valley Canyon Springs.

Kerry Crabb resigned as coach at Cypress for personal reasons. His teams were 32-48 in eight seasons. He will remain at Cypress as a teacher and athletic director.

Boys’ Water Polo

Goalkeeper Chay Lapin and driver Scott Swanson, All-Americans from Long Beach Wilson who were the Southern Section Division I co-players of the year, have committed to UCLA.

Both players have national youth team experience and led Wilson to a 13-11 victory over Santa Ana Foothill in the Division I final last fall.

It was Wilson’s fourth consecutive title and eighth in the last nine years.
