A Buddhist nun ended her 100-day hunger strike after the South Korean government promised to study whether a tunnel project would threaten an endangered type of salamander and other species.

In the last week, her condition gripped national attention, with thousands of activists holding candlelight vigils across the country.

Jiyul Sunim, 48, was protesting the government’s construction of a bullet train tunnel through Mt. Cheongseong, in Gyeongsang province.
