From Times Wire Reports

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra claimed victory in Thailand’s general election, propelled by strong support from the country’s rural poor and his handling of the tsunami disaster.

With more than half the votes counted, the Election Commission projected Thaksin’s Thais Love Thais party had captured 374 of the 500 national assembly seats and the rival Democrat Party managed 91. Official final results are expected later in the week.
