The European Commission said it had resumed its antitrust review of an investment by Microsoft Corp. and Time Warner Inc. in ContentGuard Inc., a maker of anti-piracy software.

Spokesman Jonathan Todd said the European Union head office had set an April 7 deadline to approve or block the deal.

Microsoft and media giant Time Warner bought out most of Xerox Corp.’s stake in ContentGuard last April, but ran into problems with the European Commission, which threatened to block the deal because of fears of Microsoft’s market power.
