From Times Staff and Wire Reports

UC Santa Barbara scientists have discovered a new species of coral off Southern California that flames like a pink and white Christmas tree, as well as a new species of worm that lives off it.

Marine biologist Milton Love discovered it in 2002 while making fish surveys near the Channel Islands. His lab determined that the species is a type of black coral -- the color it turns when it dies. There are about 230 species of black coral around the world. Most are in deep water and some are prized for jewelry.
