The Screen Actors Guild has called for the creation of an Oscar category honoring stunt coordinators, saying stunt work is a critical yet overlooked part of the motion picture industry.

Members of the stunt community have been pushing for a best stunt coordinator Oscar category to no avail.

John Pavlik, director of communications for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said all requests for categories are taken seriously by the Board of Governors but are rarely successful.

The last category created was for animated feature films in 2001, Pavlik said. Before that, the newest category to be created was for makeup in 1981.
