Plan to Cut Farm Subsidies Makes Sense

Share

I applaud President Bush’s concept of reining in government subsidies to farmers. In the center of that radar screen are the California Central Valley rice farmers (“Growing Concerns on Farm Cuts,” Feb. 8).

To raise a water-intensive crop in the middle of the arid Central Valley has never made any sense, unless you take into account both water and crop subsidies.

California has to purchase much of its water, and it is unconscionable to subsidize crops that are counter to the local growing conditions.
