Dorrell Adds to His Staff

UCLA Coach Karl Dorrell named Thurmond Moore as defensive line coach Saturday, replacing Don Johnson, who left the Bruins to accept the same job with the Chicago Bears earlier this week.

“[Moore] is a very good defensive line coach and his lines have excelled in the area of pressuring the quarterback,” said Dorrell, who moved this week’s start of spring practice back from Tuesday to Wednesday.

“I feel our young players will benefit greatly from Thurmond’s experience and teaching ability.”

Moore, 49, worked with UCLA defensive coordinator Larry Kerr when both coached at Colorado State in the late 1990s.

He coached the Ram defensive line, which included future NFL Pro Bowl player Joey Porter and his Pittsburgh Steeler teammate Clark Haggans.

Moore spent the 2004 season as cornerbacks coach for the University of Tulsa after three seasons as defensive coordinator at the University of Buffalo.

He also coached Syracuse’s defensive line in 1999 and 2000 and helped develop Indianapolis Colt all-pro end Dwight Freeney.
