The Socialist Party returned to power in Portugal after three years as voters appeared to punish the conservative government for failing to pull the nation out of an economic slump.

The Socialists secured a majority in the 230-seat legislature for the first time, winning 120 seats. The result could allow party leader Jose Socrates, who will be the fourth prime minister in three months, to push through painful economic reforms.

Socrates has said he wants the nation to change direction and modernize the economy.
