The leader of a nationalist group that seized a police station, taking 10 officers hostage and later allegedly killing four other officers in an ambush, agreed to lay down his weapons.

Antauro Humala’s pledge on local radio signaled the end of a standoff that began Saturday, when about 100 gunmen seized the station in Andahuaylas, 275 miles southeast of Lima, and demanded that President Alejandro Toledo quit.

In a separate statement, Humala denied reports that his fighters ambushed police early Sunday, insisting they had repelled a surprise attack by authorities.
