Swift X-Ray Telescope Captures Gamma Burst

The Swift X-Ray Telescope has captured its first gamma ray burst, encouraging scientists who hope the orbiting satellite will help unravel the mystery of the most powerful explosions known. A burst is thought to signal the explosion of a giant star and birth of a black hole. The telescope captured the afterglow of a burst on Dec. 23, a month after its launch.
