Resolved: No multitasking

With the holidays past and the ink on the resolutions still drying, resolve lingers in the air. But as the impulse for more/faster/better stirs in the nascent days of 2005, Canadian journalist Carl Honore wants to show life in the slow lane to the overworked and the overstressed.

Honore recently proffered 10 tips gleaned from his book, “In Praise of Slowness: How a Worldwide Movement Is Challenging the Cult of Speed” (Harper SanFrancisco), and we’ve helped translate his tips into language that time-deprived Southern Californians can grasp.

1. Downsize your calendar: Consider this option if your Palm Pilot rings to remind you to take your third-grader to soccer practice in between Bikram yoga and “Mommy and me” classes and before the 4 p.m. meeting with your agent.

2. Question your inner speed demon: Ask yourself if driving on the southbound 101’s shoulder will really get you to that 134 split faster. Trust us, the IKEA in Burbank will still be there.

3. Take up a slow hobby: Surfing overstock.com or Amazon.com on a 56K modem is not considered a hobby.

4. Stop clock-watching: Remember that resolution to read more? Enjoy your book. The TiVo is set for “Desperate Housewives.”

5. Rediscover the joys of the table: Dinner can be so much more than microwaving the other half of your Poquito Mas/Baja Fresh/La Salsa or Wahoo’s burrito from lunch.

6. Take a walk: If you do this while shopping sales at the Grove, it doesn’t count.

7. Meditate: Watching Letterman’s Top 10 before going to bed is not considered meditation.

8. Consider an alternative approach to your health: Try a reiki session -- in lieu of popping the Xanax -- to help prepare for that meeting to discuss your boss’ big plans for you in the new year.

9. Vacation slowly: Just a reminder that weekends in Vegas are not considered vacation.

10. Turn it off: We’d really like to enjoy those screenings of Oscar contenders without hearing your cellphone/BlackBerry vibrating in your pocket. Really.
