Authorities in Graniteville barred thousands of residents from most parts of the mill town for a fifth day after a train wreck that released a cloud of chlorine gas, killing nine people and injuring more than 300.

Emergency crews temporarily sealed a ruptured tanker car to stop the leak of chlorine and worked to put a more permanent patch in place, said Aiken County sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Michael Frank.
