From Times Wire Reports

A two-day civic strike to protest a rise in gas prices blocked streets and stopped public transport in Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s richest and largest city, with 1.2 million people.

The government said it would not reverse the price hikes because it could not afford the $30 million in subsidies needed to keep gas prices down.

In El Alto, a poor city overlooking the administrative capital, La Paz, protests continued for a second day against the gas price increases and against the lack of water supply to many residents. The government agreed to cancel the contract with the current utility.
