FCC’s Olympics Probe Insults Our Heritage

Share

Re “Since When Is Greece’s Culture Obscene?” Commentary, Jan. 16: I am so very embarrassed that our Federal Communications Commission is taking it upon itself to investigate the opening ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Olympics. It was the most beautiful opening ceremony I’ve seen (and I’ve seen many).

Yet, in its authoritarian, backward movement, this agency takes on what is truly one of the finest representations of Western culture -- a beauty that has been handed down to us, that we have built on over the eons.

Where are the voices of reason and real decency that would object to the actions of this misguided, narrow-focused agency? Chairman Michael Powell’s “marching backward” leadership is destroying yet another agency we look to to really protect us from the truest obscenity, which is the smothering of our free speech and heritage.
