Wrath of ‘Kong’

Share

As an author currently working on a book about the history of King Kong in the cinema, I was very pleased to read John Horn’s very informative article on the upcoming Peter Jackson version. I was disappointed to see, however, that Horn chose to report an oft-repeated piece of Kong lore that Paramount’s 1976 version of the film was a flop. The film grossed $52.6 million at the domestic box office and more than double that overseas, quite an impressive achievement in an era when only one film (“Jaws”) had made over $100 million. Not bad for a so-called “flop.”
