2 Regions Join Forces in Push for Autonomy

Civic leaders in Bolivia’s gas-rich Tarija region joined wealthy neighbor Santa Cruz in a push for regional autonomy.
It was not clear what level of control they sought, but Tarija Civic Committee leader Roberto Ruiz said his group was not seeking a breakup of the country. The anti-government movements in both regions plan to march simultaneously Friday in frustration over President Carlos Mesa’s policies.
