Talk About Deep-Sixed

What happens when a hole with a bunker in the middle of the green that might as well be a sinkhole has a real sinkhole in the bunker in front of the green?

If it’s the famous sixth hole at Riviera Country Club, you fix it.

When the recent heavy rains hit Riviera, water rushing from a high spot on the course caused a sinkhole in the massive sand trap that guards the front of the green of the 200-yard par three, famous for the round sand trap in the center of the putting surface.

“It was quite a scene,” said Michael Yamaki, a spokesman for Riviera’s ownership group.

Matt Morton, the course superintendent, said too much water flowing through the bunker caused the sinkhole, adding that repairs had already been made.

“There wasn’t anything to be concerned with,” Morton said. “It’s all fixed. It’s going to play as usual.”

In fact, the sinkhole wasn’t really that big to start with.

“Now the bunker, that’s what’s big,” Morton said.

The Nissan Open will be played Feb. 17-20 at Riviera.
