Pinochet’s Chief of Security Is Sent to Prison
The chief of the feared security service of former dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet was forcefully arrested at his home and sent to prison with four of his top aides after being convicted in a human rights case.
Retired Gen. Manuel Contreras, 75, refused a court order to appear before a judge to be served notice of his 12-year sentence and be sent to jail. The four others appeared voluntarily.
All were convicted in the 1975 arrest of Miguel Angel Sandoval, a member of an urban guerrilla group. Sandoval has been missing since his arrest.
