Immigration Screening at Jail

Re “Baca’s Plan to Screen Inmates OKd,” Jan. 26: Sheriff Lee Baca is to be commended for his recommendation, subsequently approved by a 3-to-2 vote of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, for a pilot program to train clerks at the county jail to identify inmates who are illegal immigrants and turn them over to immigration officials.

What I don’t understand is how Supervisors Gloria Molina and Yvonne Brathwaite Burke could vote against this program. I guess they care more about placating their “stakeholders” than about saving taxpayers’ money and looking out for the public safety as a whole.
