A Race Controversy Closer to Home

Re “Blacks Demand Fox Apologize for Stamps,” July 5: Obviously neither the Rev. Jesse Jackson nor the NAACP has visited the Metro Rail transfer station at Wilmington and Imperial Highway. If so, they would have seen “artwork” depicting exaggerated black cartoon characters from our own American culture.

Residents of the Watts area -- along with other concerned citizens -- have tried for years to have this offensive display replaced with dignified representations of black Americans, similar to the beautiful layout in the downtown subway station glorifying Cesar Chavez and early Mexican settlers. I can’t help but wonder why these stamps are considered “injurious to black people,” while no one notices the insensitive, negative depictions in our own backyard.
