Inmate healthcare
Re “New Rule: Go to Jail, Pay to See a Nurse,” July 7:
It’s poor public health practice to charge Los Angeles County jail inmates $3 for each visit to a nurse. Such a disincentive to seeking health and medical care will only result in sick inmates being released back into the community to infect the innocent, general, non-incarcerated population.
Additionally, what about other institutionalized populations receiving free healthcare under governmental auspices: state and federal prisoners, veterans in VA domiciles and military personnel? Should they also be charged per visit?
