Hospital Fire Kills at Least 18 in Capital
From Times Wire Reports
A fire swept the top three floors of a hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital, before dawn, killing at least 18 people as it engulfed the central staircase of a building without adequate fire exits or a sprinkler system.
Medical personnel smashed through windows as they tried to help patients escape. People could be seen on live TV climbing onto ledges of the five-story building or using sheets to lower themselves to safety.
