Senate Panel May Review Cox’s Nomination Soon
The U.S. Senate may next week take up the nomination of Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) to head the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The chairman of the Senate committee that oversees the SEC said Tuesday that he hoped the panel next week would review White House nominations to fill three SEC seats, including the chairmanship.
“We’re going to try to bring all the nominees up,” Senate Banking Committee Chairman Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) told Reuters.
The committee’s staff put out a release Tuesday reserving July 26 for hearings on “pending nominations,” without mentioning the SEC openings.
The White House has sent Cox’s nomination to the committee, but hasn’t yet acted on two other openings. Democrats have asked President Bush to renominate SEC Commissioner Roel C. Campos for another term, and to nominate SEC staffer Annette L. Nazareth to replace resigning Commissioner Harvey J. Goldschmid.
“It is Sen. Shelby’s hope that the committee may be able to consider Mr. Cox’s nomination, along with the other two vacancies, before the August recess,” said Shelby spokeswoman Virginia Davis.
Congress adjourns for its August recess after next week.
Cox would replace William H. Donaldson, who resigned as SEC chairman June 30.
